I just love driving the N1 from Cape Town

I’m not Aerophobic…I Love Driving

Well let me tell you something, I’m not afraid of flying…I just love driving. Just because a lot of people don’t see the point in sitting in a car for 16 hours, or worse, in a bus for a million days; that doesn’t make me afraid of flying. And in any case, I know for a fact that a plane is the safest form of transport; Superman even said so. There is a scene in Superman – The Return when Superman saves a plane from plummeting into a baseball field, and just before he makes his grand, Supermanly exit, he says to the passengers: Don’t let this put you off flying…it still is the safest form of transport statistically speaking. Now tell me, if Superman can reassure us that flying is the safest form of transport…what’s there to be scared of? After all, even if something does go wrong in mid-air, there’s a 0.1% chance that Superman will come and save the day…

As much a safe transport as an airplane maybe, I prefer the tar road and those white lines; and I prefer that anyone who sees me coming up in their rear-view mirror use the yellow line because I’m driving. For the N1 I prefer a 4x4 because I have to contend with trucks…lots and lots of 18-wheeler, freight trucks; they carry whatever they carry between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Now if you’ve ever driven the N1 you’ll know that those monsters are a bit of a pain in the boot; the truck drivers are pretty mean after all those years of driving up and down the N1.

When I prepare for a journey down my favourite stretch of road, I don’t just go for any 4x4, I go for a beast. These beasts come in many forms; like a Land Rover Defender for instance, or a Hummer. But these two beasts will just create a situation whereby I’m an elephant and the truck driver is a dinosaur that is hesitant to mess with me; he doesn’t know what I’m capable of. So which beast of a 4x4 could possibly better the two I’ve mentioned? A BMW X5 4.8is or the Range Rover Sport Supercharged. Though they are not as monstrous as the other two, these two machines are brutally, and I mean brutally fast.

We can save the Defender for the day I decide to just cut through the mountains until I get to Johannesburg. But for the tarmac, nothing beats the X5 4.8is or the double R. Both of them can stand up to those trucks…heck even the trucks move to the yellow line when they see you in the rear-view mirror.
So if you want to fly with Superman in the sky it’s your choice…for all we know you’re the one who is scared of driving. But as for me, I’m not scared of flying I just love driving.
