About Cobra Rally
The Easy-Riders Motorcycle club staged the 1st Cobra Rally
at the Hangklip Hotel in September 1999. The rally was originally planned as a
once off event, celebrating the Club’s 30th anniversary. The Club didn’t
anticipate the event to be such a huge success. Attendance was almost triple
the total of people expected. The need for a bigger camp site steered the club
in the direction of Kleinplasie Show Grounds in Worcester.
Kleinplasie played host to the Cobra Rally for the next few years. The Rally
steadily grew in size during 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003. Trying to cater for
the increasing demands, the organisers moved the Cobra Rally to a new venue.
Antoniesvlei, on the outskirts of Wellington in the Boland, solved the problem.
The camp site had lots of ablution facilities, hot showers and a huge swimming
pool. This move, coupled with excellent advertising, resulted in the Cobra
attendance almost doubling in size in 2004.
The lack of co-operation and site maintenance from the local municipality,
forced the Cobra Team, at the end of 2006, to look for a new venue.
Kleinplasie, a definite favourite with the Cobra faithfulls, seemed the obvious
choice. Site management had made a lot of improvements, including additional
hot showers. Another bonus was the sheer size of the place and not to mention
the fact that the organizers wanted to get away from the rain of the previous
year.
