Cape Town is one of the foremost seaside cities in the world, ranking right up there with Sydney, San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro in both good looks and functionality. This is one of the major reasons why stills photography, and even film, has taken off in the Mother City with such unprecedented success.
Apart from offering top flight production, this South African city continues to knock all competitors off the stage with its inordinate range of stunning locations.
Mountain vistas compete with sweeping beach panoramas in sheer splendour while the diverse culture of this modern city adds a vibrant, cosmopolitan flavour to an otherwise dream location.
Cape Town is unique in that it boasts not one but two distinctly different coastlines: the Atlantic seaboard and the Indian Ocean coast. Although it makes up only a miniscule percentage of the 2,500km long coastline, it does offer an extravagant array of choices for professional photography in South Africa.
Whether the client insists upon snug, yet imposing coves or long stretches of tempestuous breakers, Cape Town has a beach perfect for any assignment.
Muizenberg Beach is located on the False Bay coast and offers long, extensive vistas of soft, white sand. The surf is generally gentle, especially in the morning before the infamous south-easter wind starts to huff and puff. It is the ideal location for sunrise and early morning shots. Muizenberg beach has been seducing both professional and amateur photographers for many decades now largely due to the carnival-coloured beach huts that make the perfect foil to a stormy marine landscape.
Blouberg Beach is situated on the opposite side of Table Bay to the city and it is here that the myriad iconic photographs of the majestic Table Mountain are generally taken. In September, when the celebrated Namaqualand daisies are in full bloom, great shots can be taken across the bay of the iconic Table with splatterings of yellow and white in the foreground.
Clifton Beach is a collection of 4 small coves and the premier beach of the Cape. It is one of several of the city's beaches endowed with blue flag status and is, without a doubt, the very best location for sublime African sunsets. It is the trendy hangout of the young and affluent and, because it is one of the sheltered beaches that is not plagued by the forceful summer breezes, is generally packed to capacity with beautiful, bronzed summer residents.
Hout Bay Beach is yet another inimitable location for stills photography in Cape Town. This beach is nestled between the back end of the Twelve Apostles, the western facade of Table Mountain, and the internationally acclaimed view site of Chapman's Peak. But it's the quaint, working fishing harbour that is really the eye-catcher. Vibrantly coloured wooden fishing boasts in hues of reds, yellows and blues compete with the fynbos clad hillsides of the Constantiaberg for attention.
