When the Cool-Runnings toboggan track in Tygervalley analysed their attendance figures since they first opened in July 2007, they were amazed to find that 67% of riders on the toboggans are adults. This is out of a total of 40,000 riders.
It seems that parents (particularly Dads) who try this adventure activity, get hooked on the speed and thrill of the 1.2km track and even come and play without the kids. Office workers in suits are often seen at Cool-Runnings at the end of the day, where they use a few circuits on the toboggan track as a way to relieve stress and have some good clean fun.
MD of Cool-Runnings, Frank Unger, says, "I was pretty surprised by these statistics but think it will change now that school holidays are kicking in." He says that he has noticed kids take to handling the toboggan much better than adults, who don't always get the gist of leaning into the curves (motorcyclists and surfers excluded).
Cool-Runnings is in Tygervalley on the hillside opposite the Bellville Velodrome. It is the first summer toboggan track in Africa, and one of over 200 worldwide. Anybody over 8-years old can take a toboggan down the track alone, under 8-year olds must be accompanied by an older person (minimum 15 years old). The bob-sleds can take two people and speed is controlled by a simple lever brake. Experienced tobogganers can reach a maximum of 40kph, but to make sure everyone arrives at the bottom safely, monitors are stationed all the way along the track.
Rides are priced to appeal to a mass family market; Child/Adult prices are:R15/R20 for one ride, R30/R50 for three rides and R100/R150 for 12 rides and a pass giving unlimited rides for one-month costs just R150/R200. Buy tickets from Computicket www.computicket.co.za and Cool Runnings ticket office. Open daily this summer from 9am to 8pm.
